This report covers organic herb production research from 1999 to 2001. The focus is certified organic methods of fertilization and use of organic mulches for weed suppression. The results were not consistent. Compost increased herb leaf growth but not root growth. Imported biological fertilizers also increased plant growth and yields, but did not provide any advantage over locally produced compost. First-year
results show a significant effect from natural mulches, including yield increase and weed suppression. From Iowa State University.

An important part of this research project on organic weed management conducted at the University of New England (Australia) is a mail survey of organic and bio-dynamic growers throughout Australia asking about their experiences with weed management. The first report from the survey gives some preliminary results, and a second report on the responses of Echinacea growers is also available. (Both reports linked at this site.)

Basil is a warm season annual crop that does not compete well with weeds. We examined four methods: 1) cultivation between the rows and hand weeding within the rows; 2) oat cover crop - mowed; 3) straw mulch throughout the plot; 4) corn gluten broadcast and incorporated before planting with a follow-up application within the rows after planting. The plots were 14'x 21' and there were two replications of each control method. From Kootenai County Cooperative Extension, University of Idaho.
